Description

Archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken in November 2017 during the groundworks relating to the erection of a new dwelling, and following the demolition of the existing dwelling (relating to Colchester Borough Council planning application 171067). Approximately 89m of foundation trenches were excavated for the new dwelling. The external foundations measured 0.6m wide x 1m deep, and the internal foundations 0.45m wide x 1m deep. The were excavated through modern topsoil (L1, 0.24-0.28m thick) and accumulated subsoil (L2, c.0.5m thick). The only features defined were an early 19th-century brick wall foundation F2 and soakaway F1.<1>
