Description
Archaeological monitoring was carried out between September and December 2017 during groundworks relating to alterations and extensions (Colchester Borough Council planning application 171584). Three test pits were monitored. Test pit (TP) 1 was 0.9m x 0.9m in size, bisected by an electric cable 0.3m and a drainage pipe 0.9m below modern ground level. TP2 was 0.8 x 0.8m in size, excavated to 1.2m in depth through modern made ground. TP3, 0.8m x 0.5m in size, was excavated to a depth of 1.6m through modern made ground. A single sherd of residual Roman pottery was recovered from within L2 in the eastern side of the conservatory footing. To the rear of the property, in the location of the former conservatory, a new trench was machine excavated with a toothed bucket 0.6m wide x 1.9m deep while a soakaway 1.0 x 1.0m in size x 1.9m deep was excavated in the garden. To the south of the existing garage, a small foundation trench was hand-excavated for the utility room extension, a 4.1m long L-shaped trench x 0.2m wide. There was extensive modern disturbance and no archaeological remains were defined.<1>
