Description

Five trial trenches (82m in total, each 1.8m wide) were excavated by Colchester Archaeological Trust in September 2017 (CBC planning application 163213 for demolition of existing bungalow and garage and construction of five bungalows and associated garages). In general, trenches were excavated through modern topsoil (L1, c.0.10-0.25m thick) and subsoil (L2, c.0.25-0.40m thick and L3 c.0.25-0.30m deep) onto natural sands (L4). The evaluation defined four, probably modern, tree-throws (F1 and F2 in T4 and F3 and F4 in T2), an undated ditch (F5, c.0.70m wide x 0.15m deep, aligned NNE to SSW, in T3) and two (probable) natural linear features (F6 and F7 in T1). Tree-throws F3 and F4, between them, contained three small fragments of abraded Late Iron Age/Roman pottery and CBM, along with some charcoal and modern rooting. The report suggests the finds are likely to be residual.<1>
