Description

A trial trenched evaluation was undertaken by Oxford Archaeology East in September 2017 to inform an appeal against the refusal of outline planning permission (CBC planning application 170200) for residential development (planning appeal ref APP/A1530/W/17/3178656). A total of 21 trenches were excavated, each measuring 30 x 1.8m (and equating to a 2% sample); 16 trenches were located on the east side of Bakers Lane in Areas 1 (15 trenches) and 2 (one, across the area of proposed sustainable drainage area), five were located in Area 3 on the west side of the road.<1> Area 1 contained a post-medieval field boundary ditch and several other post-medieval agricultural ditches possibly relating to land drainage. A single ditch (ditch 24 in T11, 0.9m wide x 0.11m deep), aligned N to S, and two pits with charcoal rich fills (pit 22 in T10, 0.6m wide x 0.09m deep, and pit 10 in T12, 0.87m wide x 0.25m deep) were recorded at the northern end of this area. The ditch contained a single sherd of Middle Bronze Age pottery (6g), a residual fragment of CBM and moderate charcoal. One of the pits (pit 22 in T10) was radiocarbon dated to the late 9th-10th century AD; radiocarbon dating of this charcoal produced a date of 793-977 cal AD (95.4% confidence) (1143±30 BP; SUERC-75427). The other was unsuitable for radiocarbon dating. The single trench in Area 2 was devoid of archaeology, while in Area 3 a series of drainage gulleys were identified alongside modern disturbance. The evaluation followed a heritage assessment compiled by Pegasus Group in January 2017 (ECC3966) and a flugate gradiometer geophysical survey by Magnitude Surveys in December 2016 (ECC3904).
