Description

Archaeological monitoring and recording was carried out by John Newman in August 2017 during the groundworks for a side extension (CBC planning application 170478). A foundation trench 12.50m long in total x 0.6m wide x 1m deep was excavated following the breaking out of the concrete footings to the conservatory that had been demolished previously. Along the western side of the footprint area the concrete removed was only 0.6m deep. However, along the northern and southern sides it was up to 0.9m deep as drainage pipes related to the house had been encased in a substantial amount of concrete. Once the concrete had been removed the trench deposit profiles could be examined and these comprised 0.3m of topsoil on the outer face of the trenches, over 0.4 to 0.5m ofsubsoil. A single drainage pipe, aligned N to S, was revealed at the base of the trench. No archaeological remains were encountered.<1>
