Description

Three trial trenches (two 30m-long trenches and one 25m-long, all 1.8m wide) were located within the 0.8ha site (to the west of the existing building), although one (T2) was not fully excavated due to contamination (CBC planning application 171274). Natural geology was recorded in both of the fully excavated trenches, although there was significant made ground across the site. In Trench 1, for example, there was tarmac and made ground layers to a depth of 0.73m. These overlaid a subsoil, approximately 0.33m thick, which in turn overlaid natural. A single E to W aligned linear ditch 106, 1.1m wide x 0.32m deep, (containing medieval roof file and modern glass) was recorded within Trench 1 dated to the medieval to modern period. The ditch lines up with a field boundary shown on Ordnance Survey Maps from 1876 to 1977. Two geological features were tested in Trench 3.<1>
