Description

Assessment of a group of (unlisted) farm buildings undertaken by David Mizon (Whitworth Partnership) to support CBC planning application 160875 for residential conversion.<1> The buildings comprise a main red brick barn on a E to W axis on the north side with two lower narrower ranges that extend southwards to form a U-shaped arrangement around a yard open on the south side. The western of the projecting wings where it joins the barn is of red brick construction and contains stables and appears contemporary with the main (late 19th century) barn, but the southern half is formed of a small timber-framed and weather boarded barn on a slightly different alignment than the brick built section, suggesting that it was built earlier than the brick section and indeed it is present on the 1841 Tithe Map. Inside the timber-framed section high on the northern gable at the junction with the brick range is the remains of an external door and some of the original weatherboarding remains on the walls. The East projecting wing is partly of timber framed and partly brick construction and the roof is finished in red pantiles. To the north of the main brick barn and adjoining the road is a separate timber framed, weatherboard clad building, with a steeply pitched roof finished in red pantiles. This building was also present on the 1875 map.
