Description

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by NAU (NPS) Archaeology between August 2007 and January 2008 along a new Anglian Water pipeline, during topsoil stripping for the easement, 4km long between Stanway and Layer-de-la-Haye. The watching brief defined nine pits (3, 7, 9, 11, 13, 18, 21, 25 and 29), scattered along the pipeline easement, one post medieval ditch (16) and one undated ditch (34) along the length of the easement. In general, the pits were circular (13 and 29 were oval) and c.0.8m in diameter and all were shallow (less than 0.25m deep), and three (21, 25 and 29) contained charcoal rich fills. One (7) was cut by a second smaller pit (9), which contained a single sherd of Late Iron Age pottery and a small quantity of cremated bone.<1>
