Description

Archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken by Colchester Archaeological Trust in November 2018 during the groundworks for a new extension (c.12.6m of foundation trenching, 0.5m wide x 1.0-1.1m deep). The foundation trench was excavated through three layers. A layer of concrete and sub-base (c.0.15m thick) sealed subsoil (L1, c.0.20m thick), which lay above natural (L2, yellow/orange/brown sand with common gravel), encountered at a depth of c.0.35m below current ground level). A possible quarry pit F1 was uncovered at the northern end of the foundation trenching. Some fragments of peg-tile were retrieved, giving a broad 13th- to early 20th-century date range for this feature.<1>
