Description

Henry Laver records that in 1884 workman laid water pipes in a sewer trench at West Lodge Road, encountering a Roman road and laying the pipes on its flat surface, he states that 'No remains have been seen by me between the end of the Avenue and the earthwork at the back of Lexden Park (i.e. Bluebottle Grove)..but..before the stones were removed, and the land had not so long been in cultivation, the course might easily be traced by the altered appearance of the crops directly across the fields, from the end of the Avenue to the south end of the Bluebottle Grove'<1><2>
