Description

Archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken by Colchester Archaeological Trust in June 2017 during groundworks for a part two-storey, part single-storey rear extension (CBC planning application 170871). An L-shaped foundation trench measuring c.12.25m in length was dug under archaeological supervision to the rear of the house. The trench was 0.55m wide and was excavated to a depth of 1.2-1.45m. The investigations defined a single linear feature F1, possibly a ditch (possibly aligned SSE to NNW), 1.2m wide x 0.5m deep (c.0.7m below current ground level), containing a sherd of 2nd to 3rd/4th century pottery, and the remains of post-medieval or modern structures previously standing at this site. In addition, five soil layers (L3, L4, L6, L7 and L8) were defined which contained Roman pottery of a similar date and CBM: F1 was cut through layer L3, which itself sealed L4, and L6.<1>
