Description

Archaeological monitoring and recording was carried out by Colchester Archaeological Trust in July 2017 during the groundworks for front and side extensions (CBC planning application 170670). A foundation trench measuring approximately 16m was dug under archaeological supervision at the front of the house. The foundation trench was excavated through four layers. Modern concrete paving and sand bedding (L1, c.0.16m thick) sealed a layer of buried topsoil (L2, c.0.2m thick). L2 sealed a layer of subsoil (L3, c.0.11m thick) which sealed natural clays (L4). The trench measured 0.45m wide x 0.92m deep. A single modern pit (F1) was defined.<1>
