Description

An archaeological evaluation (two trial-trenches, 20m in total length x 1.4m wide) was carried out at land to the rear of 320a-326 Ipswich Road in advance of the construction of two new detached dwellings (CBC planning application 151985). Three layers were recorded. Modern topsoil (L1, c 0.16-0.24m thick) sealed accumulated subsoil (L2, c 0.21-0.4m thick). This layer sealed the natural (L3, encountered at a depth of c 0.42-0.6m below current ground level). A single post-medieval ditch terminus, 0.82m wide x 0.06m deep, aligned WSW-ENE, was uncovered during this evaluation.<1>
