Description

Archaeological monitoring and recording was carried out by Colchester Archaeological Trust at Nunn’s Road car park during the removal of a tree stump and groundworks for a new retaining wall (Colchester Borough Council planning application 170213). A section of wall, c.4m in length and 1.5m in height, was removed to permit the extraction of a large tree stump. The soil was then cut back by approximately 0.5m to accommodate a new retaining wall. The excavation revealed the remains of a post-medieval or modern demolished building, marked by abundant roots, bricks, slate, pan-tiles, mortar and iron objects, and defined by a brick wall, approximately 0.8m in height and aligned E-W, located to the rear of 48-50 West Stockwell Street.<1>
