Description

Archaeological monitoring and recording was carried out by Colchester Archaeological Trust in April 2017 during the groundworks for a new rear extention (CBC planning application 170589). Following demolition of the existing rear extension only two new foundation pits were excavated as the new extension was to be largely rebuilt on the existing foundation. Both pits were roughly triangular in shape totalling 2.4m² and excavated to a depth of 0.7-0.85m. Three layers were recorded. A layer of paving slabs, concrete and medium yellow sand (L1, c.0.25m thick) sealed a band of loose, soft medium grey brown sandy silt (L2, c.0.27-0.3m thick with frequent small stones, small modern brick and tile fragments and some roots) which in turn sealed a band of natural sand and gravel (L3). There were no significant archaeological remains.<1>
