Description

Archaeological monitoring and recording was carried out adjacent to 62 Head Street (at Sir Isaac's Walk), Colchester during groundworks for a trial-hole to check if the ground was suitable for the installation of a new interpretation panel (planning application 163208). The hole measured 440mm x 280mm and 510mm deep. A second hole (which was used for the display panel) was dug 30m further to the east and measured 450mm by 350mm and 800mm deep. Both were excavated through modern paving laid on a sandy-concrete, onto a layer of modern silty-loam. A layer of oyster shell was encountered at th ebase of the second hole.<1>
