Description
Two small areas (Areas 1 and 2, based on features defined by trial-trenched evaluation) were the subject of strip, map and sample excavations in February 2017 (CBC planning application no. 152826). Area 1 (900sq m) centred on Evaluation Trench T17, extending to T11 and T18. The area contained an elongated pit (1008/1011) and a probable treehole (1004). The nature of the feature found in the trial trench (17/004) was also further clarified, and shown to be an elongated pit (1005) rather than a gully. Area 2 (100sq m) centred on the south end of T9. No archaeological remains, other than the pit (9/004) previously recorded in the trial trenching, were found in Area 2. No artefacts were retrieved from any of the features encountered and all remain undated.<1>
The strip, map and sample excavation followed a trial-trenched evaluation in January 2017 (ECC3934).<2>
