Description

Archaeological monitoring and recording was carried out by Colchester Archaeological Trust in May 2017 during the groundworks for the erection of two storey side extension and single storey rear extension (following demolition of garage) (CBC planning application 146617). The foundation trench for the new extension totalled approximately 22m long by 0.5m wide and 0.8m deep. Three layers were recorded. Modern topsoil (L1, c.0.2-0.3m thick, medium-dark slightly sandy-silt with occasional modern CBM fragments) sealed a layer of subsoil (L2, c.0.25-0.45m thick, mottled medium brown/grey slightly sandy silty-clay), which sealed natural sands and gravels (L3, encountered at a depth of c.0.7m below current ground level). The monitoring revealed two undated (possible) pits (F1 and F2), in the southwest corner of the foundation trench, and an irregular tree-throw (F3). No finds were recovered from the investigation.<1>
