Description

Area 2, NE part of Severalls Hospital site, Colchester (CBC planning application 152733). Trial trenched evaluation in 2016 by Cambridge Archaeological Unit defined charcoal-filled pits in a number of trenches in the eastern part of the site (Trenches 31 and 32)(ECC3797).<1> A brief was prepared for a strip, map and sample excavation in November 2016 (an area of c.0.50ha.). Unfortunately, the sales office/area was erected on the north side, and works started on the south side, within the area prior to the archaeological investigation, reducing the area of investigation.<2> Two charcoal pits [1015] and [1017] were present in the excavation area. The fill of [1015] returned a calibrated C14 date of 997-1155 AD at 95.4% probability, with a 53.2% probability within this range of a 1065-1155 AD date, placing the feature in the early medieval. There was a considerable level of modern disturbance relating to modern tree clearance.
