Description

Archaeological monitoring and recording was carried during groundworks for a rear extension in November 2017 (Colchester Borough Council application 162599). Groundworks comprised a foundation trench, c.7.2m long x 0.45m wide x 1-1.2m deep. The trench was excavated through three layers. Modern topsoil (L1, c.0.28-0.29m thick) sealed a layer of subsoil (L2, c.0.42-0.44m). L2 sealed a layer of cover loam (L3, c.0.2-0.23m thick) which in turn sealed naturally-deposited sands and gravels (L4). No archaeological remains were defined.<1>
