Description

A fieldwalking survey was carried out by Cotswold Archaeology of land (36.5ha. of agriculatual land divided across five fields) at Highfields Farm, Kelveden, in order to inform a planning application for a solar farm.<1> The survey recovered a small quantity of worked flint and no prehistoric pottery, suggesting that the site was not a focus of prehistoric activity. A small quantity of Roman artefacts was recovered. A distinct cluster of Roman ceramic building material, the report suggested, may represent activity associated with a Roman tile kiln identified previously to the north of the site. A single sherd of medieval pottery was recovered. High quantities of post-medieval artefacts (pottery and ceramic building material) were recovered; this material was probably deposited during field manuring, or through the dumping of material to improve drainage or traction.
