Description
A trial trenched evaluation was undertaken in advance erection of two-storey teaching block, all-weather sports pitch, amended internal vehicle access route, car parking, cycle racks and associated facilities (CBC application 161668).<1>
Seven trenches were excavated across the site, 202m in total length x 1.80m wide. Natural sandy silt deposits with gravel inclusions were exposed in all trenches. Above the natural was a firm sandy silt subsoil, averaging 0.35m thick which was covered by a thin topsoil and turf 0.10m thick. Archaeological features were recorded in four trenches (T1, T2, T3 and T4), comprising two pits (T1 & T2), a ?ditch terminus (T4) and a large feature which may have been linear feature or a quarry pit (in T3), measuring 4.90m wide x 1.84m deep. The pit in T2 contained four retrievable fragments of CBM, one of which was late medieval or post-medieval. The upper fill (the base was augered) of the feature in T3 yielded a fragment of undiagnostic CBM, an iron nail, a piece of fire-cracked flint and a fragment of burnt clay, suggesting a Roman or later date; perhaps as late as post-medieval. Finds from the fill of the ditch terminus in T4 consisted of an undiagnostic fragment of possible paving brick, an iron nail and a fragment of sandstone paving which was medieval or later.
