Description

Archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken to the north of, and in advance of the redevelopment of, Greytown House, Colchester in 2017 (CBC planning application 152506).<1> Phase 1 monitoring was located in the car park/loading bay area immediately behind (to the north of) Greytown House. All groundworks took place through concrete and make-up dating to the 1970s redevelopment of this site; groundworks both pre- and during the 1970s had cleared most of the site. However, the discovery of a short length of wall foundation and floor was defined c.0.8m below the concrete slab, which suggests that not all of the Cups Hotel cellars (demolished in the 1970s) had been completely removed. During this monitoring, a south-facing section (15m long) was identified on the northern edge of the development site, c.1.5-2m higher than the car park/loading bay for Greytown House; the section was created in the 1970s when the cellars were removed and ground level reduced to the south. When cleaned, the section revealed remains dating to the post-medieval/modern and Roman periods, including floor layers dating from the early Roman period (clay floor BL13), through the Boudiccan destruction of the town (burnt clay floor layers BL11 and BL22), a typical post-Boudiccan layer of destruction debris (BL10, plus BL18-BL20) and into the 2nd century (the Boudiccan and post-Boudiccan layers were then sealed by a tessellated floor of probable 2nd century date). Phase 2 monitoring (60m-long x 0.5m wide x 0.75-1.3m deep) UK Power Network service trench along St Runwald's Street to the north of Greytown House revealed Roman layers, an early medieval wall foundation from an early medieval house (MCC1207) first identified during the 1970s excavations (ECC346), two medieval pits and post-medieval/modern structural remains.
