Archaeological monitoring and recording was carried out by Colchester Archaeological Trust in August to September 2016 during groundworks for an extension of the shop front (CBC planning application 160635, removal of the existing shop fronts and replacement by new glazed shop fronts facing Culver Street East and Culver Walk, as part of the fit-out of the empty shell unit to create a new Primark store. The proposed works include the extension of the shop front up to the line of the existing brickwork above on the west side of the customer entrance on Culver Street). A concrete lintel was discovered beneath the flagstone paving was thick enough to be built on and no further groundworks were carried out.<1>
