Description
A field walking survey was undertaken by Colchester Archaeology Group in 2006 of a large arable field to the west of Wormingford Hall, following the discovery of Roman tegula and flue tile in the bank of the field. The site was not gridded out accurately but canes were placed at approx. 10m intervals along the east and west edges of the field, and walkers surveyed in approx. straight lines west to east between them, surveying a strip approx. 1m wide. A total of 11 x 1m lanes were walked. Over 1600 artefacts were noted. Of these, over 90% were recorded as Roman tile or brick. The majority was found in an area 50 x 50m in area, on the east side of the field. All types of tile was represented: tegula, imbrex, box, flue and hypocaust. Only ten sherds of pottery were recorded, of which six were Roman. Other finds included a few pieces of mortar with painted surfaces and a few pieces of marble. Finds were not removed from site.<1>
