Description

Domesday Book records a mill at Mount Bures in 1086. Stephen Walker suggests the site of the mill might have been located along Cambridge Brook, where Craigs Lane crosses the Brook. A long, low, tree-covered mound situated by the Brook, at the bottom of Craigs Lane, was sectioned by CAG; the mound was interpreted as a dam across the valley of the brook in order to hold back sufficient water to drive a small mill.<1>
