Description

Wires diary records 'A pavement of red tesserae has been discovered 30ins below the surface in the middle of the Chantry Lands. The foundation is of lime or chalk, about 1.5 ins thick, and one would be led to the conclusion that it was simply powdered lime or chalk, and had never been mortar when laid down. Fragments of wall-mortar, fresco painted, of Roman bricks and roof tiles and fictile vessels are found on the same land'. <1><2><3> This could be the same as ECC371.
