An archaeological watching brief was carried out at 266 Maldon Road, Colchester, in advance of the construction of a rear extension (CBC planning application 160674). No archaeological remains were identified.<1> Two sides of the new rear extension are being built on the foundations of a conservatory that was demolished prior to groundworks. Only the NE foundation trench was excavated. The NE foundation trench was dug by a mechanical excavator under archaeological supervision. It measured 4.2m long x 0.5m wide x 1m deep. Natural sand & gravel (L3) was identified at c.900mm below current ground level.
