Description

Archaeology South-East undertook a trial-trenched evaluation in May 2015 on land at the former Severalls Hospital, Colchester, prior to the construction of a new primary school. At the time of the evaluation, the site was meadowland interspersed with trees and brambles. A total of four trenches (160m in total), each 1.80m wide, were excavated by machine down to the natural deposits at between 0.28 and 0.4m below ground level.<1> Archaeological features were recorded in only one of the trenches; Trench 1 (the northern-most trench) contained two small undated pits and a field boundary ditch. The report (p.7) records, 'None was dated but it is probable that the linear cut [1/004] was post-medieval. The two pits, [1/006] and [1/008] were unremarkable and showed no particular characteristics of any period.'
