Description

A trial-trenched evaluation was carried out at the Lexden Wood Golf Club, Colchester, in advance of the construction of an adventure golf course and associated car parking (CBC planning application 151564).<1> The nine trial-trenches (each 30m long x 1.80m wide) revealed seven post-medieval/modern features, two undated pits and three structural features (in T7) associated with a large quantity of fired clay (2.4kg) probably from a wattle and daub structure (wattle voids are preserved). One fragment of Roman tile was found in association with the fired clay but no other dating evidence was recovered. The archaeological features identified in T7 were cut into postglacial soil layer L5 which appeared to have been largely absent in the other trenches, suggesting that the site has been partially stripped at some point in the past.
