Description

A single trial trench, 10m long x 1.80m wide, was excavated in the garden of 37 Oaks Drive, across the site of a proposed new dwelling (CBC application 150461; permission was refused because of the lack of an evaluation within the SM at Sheepen: NHLE no. 1002173). No significant archaeological horizons were identified. Modern layers (perhaps associated with the construction of Oaks drive in the 1970s) were recorded to a depth of 1.3m below current ground level sealing an accumulation layer of uncertain date. Beneath this a layer of accumulated subsoil (a small sondage was excavated down to natural sand at 2.38m below current ground level) contained both Roman and medieval finds and could be of either or later date.<1>
