Description

Over a period of ten days in August 2011 a programme of community excavations were undertaken on and around the large mound, scheduled as a medieval castle motte (NHLE no. 1012056), at Mount Bures.<1> Three trenches were excavated on and around the motte and adjacent earthworks at Mount Bures, with an additional eight test pits located in the field close to the motte, next to the churchyard and in gardens through the village. The excavations were funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund as part of the Managing a Masterpiece programme in the Stour Valley and enabled more than 70 volunteers living in the surrounding area to take part in the excavations, supervised by Access Cambridge Archaeology.
