Description

Archaeology South-East excavated six trial-trenches (in a 27 ha. site) in advance of a scheme to create an intertidal habitat in an area of pasture and arable land adjacent to the Colne estuary (195m of trenching in total, 1.8m wide). <1> Two trenches (T4 & T5) and yielded archaeological evidence and only one of these produced significant features and deposits (T4). Evidence of Roman industrial activity was found in T4, comprising a hearth, an area of burning which implied a second hearth, a ditch and a post hole, all linked by an occupation deposit. The presence of red soil and briquetage strongly suggests that this was a red hill or saltern. The report concludes that there is significant archaeological survival on the site but that it is probably limited in extent to the area of slightly higher ground above the reclaimed marsh. The trial-trenched evaluation followed a geophysical survey by Wseex Archaeology. <2>
