Description

Land at Fordham (TL 93166 28538 to 93229 27056; EHER 11959 and 11973) A trial-trenched evaluation was undertaken by Birmingham Archaeology across the Colne valley, a 1.7km section of the Abberton to Wormingford Pipeline. Twenty 50m-long trenches (x 2m wide) were excavated (4% sample), placed to cover a representative sample of the pipeline easement as well as focusing upon likely locations of buried archaeological deposits and features identified as cropmarks. <1> Archaeological features were identified in Trenches 16, 18, 19, 20, 21, 23 and 24 and comprised ditches. Ditch fill 23003 contained flint tempered pottery of prehistoric date, possibly early Neolithic. See ECC3651 for the subsequent excavation.<2> Note that only those parts of the pipeline crossing river valleys were investigated.
