Description

Site 1: Wormingford Pumping Station (TL 91931 32938 to 93421 32071; EHER 9195) A trial-trenched evaluation was undertaken by Birmingham Archaeology along the northern 1.3km section of the Abberton to Wormingford Pipeline, and around the Wormingford Pumping Station, within and out of the Stour Valley. Fourteen 50m-long trenches (x 2m wide) were excavated (4% sample), placed to cover a representative sample of the pipeline easement as well as focusing upon likely locations of buried archaeological deposits and features identified as cropmarks. <1> Archaeological features were identified in Trenches 7, 8, 9, 10, 12 and 14 and comprised ditches, gullies pits and post-holes. Of the 36 sherds (78g), all were recovered from ditches. The fabrics all contained flint and although most were merely plain body sherds, a coarse flint tempered sherd from context 7003 (ditch in T7) was decorated with a finger tip impression and bore either the remnants of a cordon or a lug. A tiny, simple, rounded rim sherd from context 7007 (ditch in T7) was manufactured from a flint and sand fabric. Plasticated decoration, finger tipping and heavily flint tempered fabrics are both consistent with types of early Neolithic bowl, middle Bronze Age and late Bronze Age pottery. The largest collection of struck flint (from the entire evaluation) was recovered from Trench 7, which produced 10 pieces (out of 22 in total from all four sites). See ECC3650 for the subsequent excavation. <2>
