Description

A Level 3 historic building survey was carried out of the former Officers’ Quarters of the Royal Artillery Barracks (Grade II Listed) by Colchester Archaeological Trust in 2013, prior to conversion to residential dwellings. <1> Although the building became known as the Sergeants’ Mess towards the end of the 20th century, it was constructed as the Officers’ Quarters for the Royal Artillery in 1874-5, with the barracks known as Artillery Barracks. The barracks’ name was changed to Le Cateau after the World War One battle of 1914.
