Description

A trial-trenched evaluation (230m of trenching in an area 0.4ha. in size, i.e. a 5% sample) was undertaken by Colchester Archaeological Trust on the site of a proposed reservoir. Two layers were defined: a thin modern topsoil 100mm thick (L1), and a 250mm-thick silty clay horizon (L2) which was sealed by L1. The removal of L2 revealed natural (boulder clay with occasional patches of gravel: L3). A single archaeological feature was defined – a post-medieval ditch F1 filled with brick rubble in Trench 5.<1>
