Description
Following a monitored topsoil strip, CAT excavated 34 intercutting inhumation graves on the site of the proposed new orang-utan enclosure, to the north of the site of All Saints' Church. The graves are probably late medieval, and the absence of coffins indicates a low status. Other features included two parallel ditches, aligned NW-SE, to the NE of the burials, which may have been boundary ditches to the graveyard. The report records that the human remains are to be reburied on site. <1>
This work followed a trial-trenched evaluation by Archaeological Solutions in January 2005, which revealed 14 medieval inhumation graves. <2>
