Description
A fieldwalking survey was undertaken by Hertfordshire Archaeological Trust in 2000 on the proposed site of new mineral extraction. The survey revealed, 'a light scatter of prehistoric flints in the centre of the main southern area of proposed extraction. The flints include a number of tool types of the early Neolithic to Bronze Age' (11 struck flints and one flint chip as well as four burnt lumps). A single sherd (5g) of possible Iron Age or early Anglo-Saxon handmade pottery was also recovered close to the western boundary of the main southern application area.<1>
The fieldwalking survey was subsequently followed by a trial-trenched evaluation in 2004 (ECC4185).<2>
