Description

Construction of a housing estate. No stratified Roman layers above natural sand except in SW. Elsewhere the topsoil contained much Roman pottery - suggests quarrying activity and the dumping of material back in a mixed up condition. Bones thought by the foreman to be human noted when the foundations for No 52 were dug. Lead coffin lining found on the site of No 41 damaged by machine and rolled up by workmen in readiness for delivery to a scrap yard. Close by and presumably from the same grave was a large grey ware pot. No bones were recovered with the lining. Showing in the foundation trench of the same house was a Roman pit or ditch cut into natural sand.. Workmen reported 2 more skeletons - one found during the laying of a drain to the S of No 52 - glass bead (in possessio of Mr Moss Max Cottage, Halstead Road, Aldham) with skeleton. The other skeleton was on the S side of No 47.. Pottery recovered from the general foundation digging for No 41.. Predominantly C3 and C4 pottery with small quantities of earlier and later Roman material. Finds mainly from contractors soil tip. <1>Balkerne Hill, St Mary's Hospital nursing home
