Description

Observations of contractors trenches dug for strip foundations was maintained during redevelopment of the two courtyard areas of St Helena's School. The trenching took place mainly in the eastern half of the eastern courtyard and the western half of the western courtyard. Archaeological remains were sparse, but the gravelled surface of the precinct of Temple 2 was found extensively over much of the area trenched. At the eastern end of the east courtyard it was 0.7-0.9m below modern ground level. This gravelled surface was 50-100mm thick, sealed by topsoil and sealed a deposit of London clay which in turn sealed natural sand. Some pottery was recovered during machining (X491). The gravelled surface in the western courtyard was 0.35-0.5m deep, again sealed by topsoil and sealed London clay. A pit of possible Roman date was seen in section in this area, filled with mixed dark greyish brown sandy loam. Some of the finds probably derived from this pit (X492). Other finds were recovered during machining (X493 and X494).
