Description

In 1986, Anglian Water laid a new pipeline from the Wormingfor pumping station to a new reservoir. The course of the pipeline was fieldwalked and the topsoil strip was inspected by Colchester Archaeological Group - a 7m wide easement 0.30m deep; only c.10m of easement was available for inspection at any one time. The report states that the surface was not stripped cleanly (for archaeological purposes) and it is possible that some features were missed/masked.<1> Two areas of archaeological remains were, however, identified in Middle Field (north-east of Thatchers' Arms): b. Iron Age pit or ditch, which produced late Iron Age pottery? TL 90723291 c. Bronze Age pit, containing seven sherds of a single Late Bronze Age vessel. TL 90633188
