Description

Archaeology South-East undertook a trial-trenched evaluation on land (4.46ha. in area) to the south of Gosbecks Farm Business Park, Gosbecks Road, Colchester in November 2015.<1> The site was investigated by 37 trenches (numbered 1 to 10, and 12 to 38), distributed to provide both a representative coverage and targeting of known geophysical anomalies. Most trenches measured 2.2m wide and 30m long. The combined thickness of the topsoil and subsoil varied across the site, from c.0.3m to 0.5m, with the subsoil being entirely absent in a few trenches. Parts of the central and south parts of the site contained the deepest trenches, and the far north end the shallowest. Eleven of the 37 trenches (trenches 15, 18, 21, 22, 25, 28, 29, 30, 34, 35 and 37) revealed archaeological features, most of which lay within the site's south-east end. The range of identifiable feature types was small and almost entirely composed of ditches, gullies, and pits and/or postholes. Most of the features cut natural, although a small number of exceptions appear to have cut subsoil, thereby making them more recent in date, probably post-medieval/modern. Artefacts proved scarce, leaving most of the features either undated or only very broadly datable. Most of the artefacts date to the post-medieval and modern periods and are from post-medieval and modern ditches. The exceptions to this comprise several very late medieval pot sherds, and a small amount of earlier prehistoric and Roman pottery and struck flint. A geophysical survey was undertaken by ArchaeoPhysica in November 2015.<2>
