Description

A second stage of an archaeological evaluation was carried out by the Colchester Archaeological Trust at the rear of 95-96 High Street on 24th July 2006, in advance of a proposed mixed residential and retail development of the site. The evaluation involved the excavation of two small trenches, one (T2, 1.7m long x 0.7m wide) on the eastern side and the other (T3, 1.5m long x 0.65m wide) on the western side of the site. They were located about halfway down the plot and were positioned over the southern part of the Roman monumental arch (into the Temple of Claudius). In both trenches, the large Roman foundation (probably the robbed remains of a monumental arch) was reached at c.1.60m below ground surface. <1> The first stage of evaluation was undertaken in January 2006. <2>
