Description

In 1927 the G.P.O. cut a trench for cables down Pelham's Lane, Culver Street, and Trinity Street, enabling a number of new observations to be made. The trench passed through the town wall at right angles on the east side of the steps at Scheregate, and here although the cut was quite shallow, it was all in Roman masonry, which proved to be not less than 14ft thick. <1>
