Description
An archaeological trial-trenched evaluation took place at 97 High Street, Colchester, in advance of the redevelopment of the site. Two trial-trenches, each 5m long x 0.5m wide, were excavated by CAT in order to accurately record the position and depth of the south precinct wall of the Temple of Claudius.<1>
The northern edge of the foundation platform for the precinct wall was located in both trenches. The top of the foundation platform lay c.1m below the modern yard surface. In one of the trial-trenches (T2), the remains of a pier base, which formed part of the monumental arcade, was uncovered on top of the foundation platform. In the other trench (T1), the foundation platform was sealed by part of a later Roman blocking wall.
