Description
An archaeological evaluation by trial-trenching was undertaken by Colchester Archaeological Trust at Carters Hill, Boxted Cross, in advance of a planning application (5% sample of the 1.3ha. development area).<1>
Five trenches of varying lengths, all aligned N to S, were dug to intercept the cropmarks visible on aerial photographs. These were excavated by machine with a toothless ditching bucket and cleaned by hand. Each trench was 1.8m wide, and their lengths varied between 61m and 105m. Their depth (to natural subsoil) was, in general, c.0.40-0.50m.
The evaluation revealed pits and ditches, concentrated in the NW part of the site. Early to mid Iron Age pottery was recovered from the lower fill of pit F1 (Trench 1). The pit cut a ditch (F9), aligned NE to SW, containing prehistoric pottery, flint flakes and burnt flint. A second ditch in Trench 1, F10, was aligned NE to SW. Trench 2 contained a shallow undated pit F4.
