Description
An archaeological watching brief was carried out in September 2015 during groundworks for the installation of an arbour (totalling 5.5m²) in the eastern end of the garden adjacent to the town wall (CBC planning application 144771). Groundworks did not go deeper than modern topsoil (the ground level was lowered by approximately 150mm to allow a concrete floor to be laid) and no archaeological features or finds were revealed. The excavation of a footing for a new garage, 2.8 x 1.8m in area x 0.25-0.30m in depth, was monitored in July 2017. Again, no archaeological remains were encountered.<1>
