Description

Archaeological monitoring was carried out by Colchester Archaeological Trust during the contractors' excavation of the footprint of a swimming pool and rear extension. The monitoring took place between June and August 2015, during the excavation of a new swimming pool (6 x 4m in area) and its infrastructure, and the excavation of foundation beams (600mm wide) for the rear extension of the property (CBC planning application 146354). All groundwork was carried out using a mechanical excavator equipped with a toothless bucket. <1> There was a small amount of residual material: two small Roman sherds and six small pieces of Roman brick/tile from the foundation trenches. Natural sandy gravel was seen in both the pool footprint and the fully excavated foundations at 1m - 1.2m below modern ground level. No other archaeological remains were defined.
