Description
An archaeological assessment was undertaken by Colchester Archaeological Trust within the bailey of Colchester Castle, immediately to the north and east of the keep, in advance of the proposed use of the area for a winter market (including an ice rink and fairground rides), Winter wonderland (CBC planning application 151298).<1>
As well as a desk-based assessment, the work included a detailed contour survey of the area and a ground-penetrating radar (GPR) survey, undertaken by Tim Dennis in June 2015 (Appendix 1 of the assessment). A separate event number has not been issued for this work, the results of which were inconclusive.
A programme of archaeological monitoring and recording was subsequently carried out during the set up and take down of Winter wonderland.<2>
